Legislating for same-sex marriage is like legalising male breastfeeding – Archbishop Cordileone

Archbishop Cordileone of San Francisco has given a frank interview with the excellent Mary O’Regan of The Catholic Herald that is a delight to read, especially his down-to-earth and wise words about the Catholic struggle against the imposition of same-sex pseudo-marriage on society.

Archbishop Cordileone cautions against over-using the term ‘gay marriage’, advising that it should be used “only sparingly” because it is a natural impossibility and if we keep talking about gay marriage we might fool ourselves into thinking it is an authentic reality, which only needs government approval to make it legitimate. He compares it with another impossibility: “Legislating for the right for people of the same sex to marry is like legalising male breastfeeding”.

“Truth is clear. Wanting children to be connected to a mother and father discriminates against no one. Every child has a father and a mother, and either you support the only institution that connects a child with their father and mother or you don’t. Adoption, by a mother and father, mirrors the natural union of a mother and father and provides a balanced, happy alternative for when a child may not be reared by their biological parents.”

I tell him that I’m searching for good theological answers against gay marriage, but he corrects this notion by saying: “If you use theology, you will play into their hands and they will say you use religion to control people. Marriage isn’t primarily in theology; marriage is in nature. Theology builds on the natural institution, giving us a deeper mystical and supernatural sense of its meaning.”

‘Fighting for marriage is our way of loving God and the struggle is the particular gift that God has given our generation. This is our particular trial, and by overcoming it we may achieve spiritual greatness. It will entail suffering if we are to oppose gay marriage, something which poses such destruction to the understanding of natural marriage, which is a child-orientated institution”.

Protect the Pope comment: Archbishop Cordileone’s interview in The Catholic Herald is recommended reading because in a few words he exposes the absurdity of calling male-male, female-female sexual relationships ‘marriages’. The fact that our society is even considering this impossibility shows the disastrous consequences of separating the procreative and unitive purposes of conjugal sex through contraception. The absurdity of contraceptive sex introduces the greater absurdity of pseudo-same-sex marriage.

Which means he is ignorant about the difference between ‘sex’ and ‘gender’. Oh dear.

Leave it to an Italian (at least genetically) to say it as it is in such a grounded, but funny way. :) )

Spot on Archbishop. It is in accordance with nature for a child to be normally connected to their father and mother and this connection we call marriage. Sadly people no longer understand what nature is.

‘The absurdity of contraceptive sex’? God must be absurd then, since nature as he designed it is contraceptive. Only a small proportion of acts of sexual love lead to pregnancy and childbirth, so that by nature the unitive and procreative purposes of marriage do not always go together. There are good arguments against so-called same sex “marriage,” but this is not one of them.

great analogy – I’ll use it!

I have been helping promote the letter writing / post card campaign in our parish, and it seems to be an uphill battle, even among Catholics – people just don’t seem to understand what the problem is, or why it is a problem.

One lady said she wrote a letter against same-sex marriage, but when she read the reply, she realised she had got it all wrong, and unintentionally expressed support for same-sex marriage instead of protest!

My own daughter (non religious) thinks I am being unecessarily unkind to a group within society that “should be allowed to love like everyone else”. My son (also non religious) on the other hand thinks the whole idea of same-sex marriage is absurd.

I think this is a good time as any to ask how we have fallen to this level of having to seriously discuss something that is patently not marriage. Marriage has been undermined for decades by no-fault divorce. Think of the celebrities who mock marriage by serial monogamy or whatever they wish to call it.
And yes. Elizabeth Anscombe was right : from contraception to gay marriage is but a logical step. That is why Teresa finds the marriage campaign even among Catholics an uphill struggle.

  • ms Catholic state

Wonder when they are going to accommodate those who want to marry their pets etc etc?! Such people do actually exist. All this just makes civil marriage more and more meaningless….not worth the paper its written on. Even male-female civil marriages can be dissolved after a few months if required.

The only proper marriage left is Catholic marriage.

I believe you’re right – polyandry and polygamy will surely be recognised as a legal marriage option at some point for those who want it. All civic marriage will mean is “Ah, look at us, we’re in love!” and then maybe “Please take a group photo of us all to show how happy we are”.

The Catholic Church is going to become the last bastion for upholding the Christian definition of marriage – then again, that’s already the case for most matters of morals and the faith.

Amator Dei: you are mistaken: the crucial criterion is “what kind of act” is involved, with the emphasis on the word ‘kind’. Marital acts are the kind of acts in which procreation can take place, even if not every marital act leads to procreation. This is what distinguishes them from homosexual acts: those are not the kind of act that can lead to procreation – ever.

Here’s a little surprise for His Holiness–men CAN lactate and therefore breastfeed. Nature saw fit to give male mammals breasts that are physically the same as women’s. they are capable of lactation and some men have proved that. As for legislating it? That’ll be the day…when the world sees for to legislate the MALE body!

Watch SPUC’s Anthony Ozimic stand up to the same-sex marriage agenda (On ‘This morning’)

  • Whether men can lactate or not. The point is clear a man for woman and vise versa in Holy Matrimony & Christ in the centre of this foundation. The Problem in this world is that we go to lengths to affirm our own agenda that it is right and just…In so doing we trample on God’s commands.
God’s Creation tells us why he created men and women for the sake of procreation. He didnt create man and man….

Archbishop Cordileone of San Francisco is a courageous man who is telling God’s truth. If you’d like to better understand the Archbishops stance, I recommend you read the following from start to finish:

Yes, Philip you are absolutely right. GOD created a man and a woman. Had GOD created only man, all these present day proponents of same sex marriage, gay rights activists and the like would not have been around, including you and I.

Satan and his cohorts/agents are very active and their support base is swelling solely because of secularism and consumerism. Our focus today is all things worldly and those who profess their faith in GOD are considered old fashioned and out of synch with the modern times. Liberalism is the buzz word.

Let us not get upset about the relentless attacks mounted by Satan and his agents. We have GOD on our side and HE has assured us that the gates of Hell will not prevail against the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church HE established here on earth. Things will eventually fall in place and those who fail to fall in line, will perish. Let us pray (and pray incessantly)that the Good LORD may enlighten us all and help us see through Satan and his devious plans and guide all wayward souls back to the right path.
