Pope Francis’ devotion to Our Lady Undoer of Knots makes wider known a great grace for families

Mary-Untier-of-Knots-1Pope Francis is well known in Argentina and Brazil for promoting devotion to Our Lady Undoer of Knots which has been a source of  healing and grace for countless families.

Pope Francis’ devotion to Our Lady Undoer of Knots can be traced back to his time as a student in Germany when he came across  the early 18th-century painting showing Mary calmly undoing the knots in a long rope. Since 1700, an unknown artist’s painting of Our Lady has been venerated in the Church of St. Peter in Perlack, Germany. It was originally inspired by a meditation of Saint Irenaeus (Bishop of Lyon and martyred in 202) based on the parallel made by Saint Paul between Adam and Christ. Saint Irenaeus, in turn, made a comparison between Eve and Mary, saying: “Eve, by her disobedience, tied the knot of disgrace for the human race; whereas Mary, by her obedience, undid it”.

A website dedicated to Our Lady Undoer of Knots explains the significance of the knots:

‘But what are these knots? They are the problems and struggles we face for which we do not see any solution.
Knots of discord in your family, lack of understanding between parents and children, disrespect, violence, the knots of deep hurts between husband and wife, the absence of peace and joy at home. They are also the knots of anguish and despair of separated couples, the dissolution of the family, the knots of a drug addict son or daughter, sick or separated from home or God, knots of alcoholism, the practice of abortion, depression, unemployment, fear, solitude…Ah, the knots of our life! How they suffocate the soul, beat us down and betray the heart’s joy and separate us from God.’

The devotion to Mary Undoer of Knots is not new. The devotion is more than 300 years old. However, it is not based on an apparition of the Virgin Mary to a person, or persons, as in Lourdes or Fatima, but rather it is a revered devotion as many others in the Catholic Church, despite Virgin Mary is only one.
The devotion to Mary Undoer of Knots is becoming more and more known in many different countries, and the Novena has been printed in 19 languages, as well as in Braille. In the last 4 years, the Sanctuary of Mary Undoer of Knots has welcomed more than 600,000 pilgrims from all over the world.

At Mass, there is a multitude of people: the young, the elderly, rich and poor, all asking for help from Our Lady to simplify their lives.

Homosexuality is a grave sin. So is abortion–We must pray before America goes the way of early Rome.

Those of you who accept New Age Enneagram and the likes are quite entitled to do so – but please go somewhere else with it
. Don’t try to alter my religion. Likewise those who want women priests; Go where you will find them – don’t try to impose them on me.
You may think the Catholic Faith difficult….. it is; but nobody ever told me it would be easy. In fact I was taught by nuns who told me when I was a child that life would be very difficult being a Catholic in a protestant country (England)and it has been difficult. I certainly don’t need Catholics to make it more so.

This is pushing the envelope too far. We now are supposed to be devoted to a concept of the birth mother of Jesus that is based on a — painting? Do other belief systems place undue focus on the mommies of great men like the Buddha and Mohammad? Or are we Roman Catholics the only ones who refuse to use our God-given common sense?

You are not bound to be devoted to anyone you don’t want to be Lisa. We are being offered guidance which we can take of reject, and in my own case I have great faith in Our Blessed Lady and cannot help wondering where we would be if her answer to St.Gabriel had been No! I cling to her words as Our Lady of Guadalupe when she said to us “Did I not take you onto my knee and accept responsibility for you”.
