Pope Francis orders Cardinal O’Brien to leave Scotland to lead a life of prayer and penance

The Holy See has issued a statement concerning Pope Francis’ decision regarding the residency and future of Cardinal Keith O’Brien:

His Eminence Cardinal Keith Patrick O’Brien, archbishop emeritus of St. Andrews and Edinburgh, for the same reasons he decided not to participate in the last Conclave, and in agreement with the Holy Father, will be leaving Scotland for several months for the purpose of spiritual renewal, prayer, and penance.

“Any decision regarding future arrangements for His Eminence shall be agreed with the Holy See.”

Protect the Pope comment: Thank God the Holy Father has intervened to sort out this mess, because Cardinal O’Brien was already becoming a focus of division and agitation among the faithful in Scotland, with misguided priests saying they’d go to law to protect the rights of Cardinal O’Brien. The last thing Scotland needs is for Cardinal O’Brien to become another¬†Rembert Weakland! God preserve us from Cardinal O’Brien writing a self-justifying autobiography!

I wish the cardinal all good things and that he spends his time wisely and in prayer accepting forgiveness from God and asking forgiveness from those he hurt. He has been offered a great opportunity for spiritual renewal.

  • A very good decision for the Church in Scotland. It’s also good for the Cardinal. The last thing he should be doing is pretending nothing happened: spiritual renewal, prayer and penance is precisely what is required.

We cannot help but reflect on the enormous harm that this particular sexual deviation has done to the Church in recent times.

Why the hell is he still a Cardinal? I’m sorry but if we call for people like Tina Beatie who say things which go against Church teaching to be booted out then we must be consistant and equally harsh on others who damage the church’s credibility. In fact I would say that Priests and even more so Cardinals should be held to much higher standards than “ordinary” folk.

This gives the impression that what you say wrt sexual morality matters much more than what you actually do.

Who knows what Keith O’Brien will choose to do in the future but whatever it is whether it be a self justifying autobiography or something more constructive, far less hard will be caused if it is only being done by Mr Brien than a Prince of the Church.

The best we can do is to pray for the Cardinal.

  • Good for the Vatican to tell him to leave Scotland That country does not need him there as it is bad enough for the Cathoilc who live there As it is one Bigoted country Thomas Haverstock Winnipeg Canada

This is what Annoys me. The church is against abortion, fair enough. So why is it ok for him to perminantly destroy dozens of children’s lives. It’s somthing that will be felt for generations by these family’s. the least that should be done is him being kicked out. Personally I think two bricks are in order!
